Pet peeve of the day: When people wear band t-shirts with bands they have no clue about. This girl at school was talking about her friend offering a shirt of that kind. Guess (hint: it's black).

I got a sweet Death In June shirt from Active Footwear in Southern California one time. When I bought it I was extremely surprised that it was in that store for one, and two that I was most likely one of the few people who bought one of those shirts who knew about and like Death In June. . .
It irks me as well.

Pink Floyd. I see kids wearing them all the time at my school. I love to test them by asking them what they like about the album Meddle. Not once has someone even known what that album is. Then I ask if they have even listened to Darkside. Also, no.

I made it a point to ask people about PF shirts. Fortunately the people I talk to actually have a clue on what PF is.
Hipgnosis is a genius for all I know. I'll admit at one time I wanted a giant print of the cover for Atom Heart Mother, despite not having heard the album. I don't think I'd score a DSoTM shirt, despite having heard it too many times.
Nope, not Pink Floyd. Close-ish.

most likely an old rock band that these dumb kids know nothing about. Except that "one song", if it's a girl it's Nothing Else Matters by Metallica lol

I have a Daft Punk shirt that was also a surprising find at the time (this was before RAM). I think I freaked out the day I walked into high school and people started complementing me for wearing a Tron shirt, save for this one girl who was pretty cool.
It irks us very well.

DUN NUN NUN.
I'm gonna score a Neutral Milk Hotel shirt just to get on your nerves (I hope).

Yup! And it really got to me when she was wearing a Kurt Cobain quote as she was talking about it. I made a side comment of Kurt Cobain and the ____________ as well.

Could be AC/DC, too.

"Then I ask if they have even listened to Darkside. Also, no."
At this point, the beating started.

I think at least knowing an album and the lead singer should enable you the right to wear the shirt of a band. There has to be guidelines, man.

Closer.
Really close with the first one.
The second one I know a dude who used to rock one, despite not knowing who Kurt Cobain was. He stopped after a while.

Not to mention that outside of Urban Outfitters and downtown music joints they seem hard to find.

I wear a NERD t-shirt I found at Salvation Army because it's badass and it makes people laugh when I call myself a nerd.
All I know is that Pharrell Williams is the frontman for the band - get at me bro!
I had a song or two of theirs before but am anything but a fan. I mean, I like Pharrell, but I just don't listen to NERD.
Although this post of yours did intrigue me into listening to some songs from the album on the shirt (Seeing Sounds).
I did happen to find a Gaslight Anthem shirt at another Salvation Army which was a nice coincidence because I was a pretty big fan before finding the shirt.
I also got a great cheap Strike Anything find from eBay but that I bought cus I was looking out for one as I'm a fan - duh.

Beat rock band shirt I ever saw quoted Kurt. It had his classic head shot image and across the top the quote was " I hate myself and I want to die" below the head shot ( see what I did there) it said " we hate you too and we are glad you are dead." And the back really small at the base of the neck was a cartoon drawing of the business end of a double barrel shotgun with " bye Kurt" below it.

Damn and blast. When you said it was a black shirt I was sure it would be Zep

I think it's more frustrating if it's a widely known album cover that makes it on a t-shirt someone with no clue wears, or at least if you know the artist.

Close. They are related to punk, but classified something else for some reason.

One of these days is an amazing song off that album. The bass line just takes hold and never lets go. I also LOVE fearless and of course Echos off that album.

Well there's always Black Flag.
(I have a Black Flag tattoo. It's not the bars, though.)
Or Sonic Youth
Or I know American Apparel or Urban Outfitters had Minor Threat T-shirts going for a while.

Did anybody guess the band yet? Here is my shot at it.
Went to a Flogging Molly concert once and figured I'd wait until after the show to snag a shirt. I'm pissed to this day because it was so busy after that I just said eff it.

I never disagreed in the first place and would normally think that it's pretty dumb to wear a band shirt of a band you have no idea about and you're right - it's far worse with popular artists whose logo/album art are emblazoned on half a majillion shirts.
I'd definitely think twice about buying a shirt that may be more scrutinized - not to mention I wouldn't be buying a popular band tee in the first place.
Honestly though, I can't scrutinize too hard myself because I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't wear a cool-looking band tee if I had no idea who they were. I'd probably at least go through the effort of finding out who they were after I got the shirt (i.e. at a thrift store).
Now here's another thing which I think I can guess what your stance is...
How bout wearing band
tour
shirts if you never went to that tour/concert?
(Specifically referring to shirts that have specific tour dates on them, not just any shirt sold at concerts)

Nobody who owns that shirt has ever actually listened to Joy Division.
